Ladakh constitutes one of those few places that becomes an unforgettable experience in life. Towering mountains, sparkling lakes, and serene monasteries combined create a distinct uniqueness of experience that cannot be easily replicated. I have been fortunate enough to personally see it, and can assure you, every minute spent in Ladakh is something that resembles stepping into a postcard. Whether one is visiting Leh Ladakh for the first time or returning to the place again for another shot at adventure, this 7-day Leh Ladakh itinerary is sure to ensure that one will experience the best offerings of this region.
Let us take you through this journey day by day. Here lies the ultimate Ladakh trip itinerary.
Day 1: Arrive in Leh – Breathe, Rest, and Take It Slow
As soon as we land in Leh, the thin air is the first thing we notice. At 3,500 meters over 11,500 feet, the altitude hits you right away, so day one Leh itinerary is all about taking it slow and letting your body adjust. You don’t want to rush into things, and honestly, just being in Leh is an experience in itself.
What we do on our first day
We commence our excursion with a leisurely walk through Leh Market. This vibrant locale is characterized by local shops replete with artisanal souvenirs, cozy woolens, and the aromatic scent of freshly prepared momos wafting in the background. We procure a cup of chai and take the opportunity to fully absorb the ambiance.
From here, we take the five-minute drive from the town center to Shanti Stupa. The views from here are breathtaking, and the peace you feel as you look out over the town and surrounding mountains is unforgettable. Sunsets here are simply spectacular.
We then went on to Leh Palace. Leh Palace has a very simple and earthy charm. The palace isn’t voluminous, but it does create an absolutely silent and serene atmosphere for the day of light discovery. This is a must in any Leh Ladakh itinerary.
Pro Tip: Do not lift or hike around today. Drink gallons of water and get plenty of rest-you’ll need it all for the adventures to come!
Day 2: Dive Into Leh’s Spiritual Heritage – Monasteries Galore
After a good night’s sleep, we are geared up for the spiritual heart of Leh today. It is about Ladakh’s rich Buddhist culture by visiting the monasteries. These monasteries are beautiful in themselves. They convey a sense of peace and serenity that is pretty hard to define until you get there.
Our stops for the day:
Thiksey Monastery: Situated at altitude of 3,600 meters (11,800 feet), Just 20 km from Leh, this 12-story complex is one of the most iconic spots to include in your Leh Ladakh trip itinerary. It’s perched on a hill, with rows of whitewashed buildings and colorful prayer flags flapping in the breeze. Inside, the highlight is the giant Maitreya Buddha statue—it’s seriously impressive.
Shey Monastery and Palace: A quick drive takes us to Shey, at altitude of 3400 meters (11,200 feet) the former summer palace of the Ladakhi kings. The copper Buddha statue here is massive, and the views of the Indus Valley are postcard-worthy.
Hemis Monastery: If we’re lucky, we might catch the famous Hemis Festival, where monks perform traditional masked dances. Even if there’s no festival, Hemis is still worth the visit. It’s one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh situated at 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) and has an amazing collection of ancient artifacts.
Optional Detour: If you’re feeling up for it, a trip to Alchi Monastery is a great way to end the day. It’s one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh situated at 3,100 meters (10,170 feet), and the frescoes and carvings here are so intricate. It’s a bit of a drive from Leh (about 70 km), but totally worth it.
Day 3: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La – The Adventure Begins
Today is going to be the first day that we have our first dose of real adventure. We are heading towards Nubra Valley, which is approx. 160 KM from Leh, drive time is 4-5 hours and for that, we have to cross the legendary Khardung La Pass altitude 5,359 meters (17,582 feet)-one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The road winds up, and soon enough, we’re surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks. It’s a wild ride but every turn brings in new, jaw-dropping view.
In Nubra Valley, here’s what we explore;
As soon as we arrive in Nubra at altitiude 3,048 meters (10,000 feet), we make a quick stop at Diskit monastery altitude 3,144 meters (10,315 feet) which was a part of our Leh Ladakh trip itinerary, where one of the biggest statues of a Buddha is sitting majestically above the valley. The place is excellent for relishing the stunning view.
Hunder Sand Dunes 3,048 meters (10,000 feet)- It is a place that one would least expect to find in Ladakh – a desert within the mountains! At the Hunder Sand Dunes, we ride on a Bactrian camel (the two-humped ones!). What’s more surreal than riding in between dunes of sand and snow-capped mountains.
The Shyok River- gently flows by Nubra, a relaxing mass in the landscape. We linger on the banks for a while, absorbing the soothing sound of water, and watching the setting sun disappear below the mountains.
Stay- We spend our night at a lovely, cozy guesthouse at Nubra. The night is quiet and still—the kind we relish at the end of an exciting day of adventure.
Day 4: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake via Shyok – A Scenic Drive
Today we are going to cover the distance of 274KM which will take around 6-7 hours by car. Yes we are going to Pangong Lake via Shyok from Nubra Valley. But it is not just about the destination, it is the journey that makes this day so special. We travel along the Shyok River on the road from Nubra to Pangong and the views are out of this world. The journey is mix of winding roads, towering cliffs, and distant mountain peaks.
Arriving at Pangong Lake: 4,350 meters (14,270 feet)
On our arrival at Pangong Lake as per our Leh Ladakh trip plan, the first thing that really caught our attention was the water color which is astonishing blue. It feels almost otherworldly! We are lost for hours going along the lakeshore hypnotized by the dance of light on the water’s surface as it shifts between turquoise, deep blues, and even greens.
We take a few photos-mostly of ourselves-as we just sit there at the lake for a little bit. It’s one of those places where time just kind of stops.
Stay: We’re camping tonight along the lake! The stars shine clear out here, and a stillness pervades that makes you feel completely at peace.
After good night sleep, we wake up early in the morning to get a glimpse of Lake while sun is rising. The color of water as well as mountains changes every second. You can feel that how fast time changes naturally. Time never stops!
Day 5: Pangong Lake to Leh via Chang La Pass
After watching sun shine onto Pangong Lake, it is time to head back to Leh. Today’s drive is going to be over Chang La Pass another high-altitude pass 5,360 meters (17,590 feet) having breathtaking views. We pass through small villages, yaks grazing in fields, and again mountains more than you can count. We have covered approximately 225 KM in a drive of 6-7 hours.
Once back in Leh, we visited Sankar Gompa, a peaceful little monastery in the town, and dine at one of the local restaurants (There are lots of good restaurant in Leh, but at this time I am not able to remember the name in which we had lunch) and spend the evening visiting any places that we hadn’t managed to see yet earlier in the week.
Day 6: Leh to Tso Moriri Lake 4,522 meters (14,836 feet)– A Hidden Gem
If you think Pangong Lake is incredible, wait until you see Tso Moriri. This high-altitude lake has fewer visitors, though its grandeur is equally or even more magnificent than the previous one. The trail to Tso Moriri passes through the most remote areas, and when we finally reached, it felt as if we had just discovered treasure that nobody knew. It takes 6-7 hours and we covered 220 KM in distance from Leh to reach Tso Moriri Lake.
What we do at Tso Moriri:
We walk along the lake’s edge, taking in the quiet, untouched beauty of the place. It’s so peaceful here, and the lake is a deep, mesmerizing blue.
We also visit Korzok Village, one of the highest inhabited villages situated at 4,595 meters (15,075 feet) in the world, where you can get a glimpse of how people live in this remote part of Ladakh.
Stay: We spend the night in a small guesthouse near the lake. It’s a simple but beautiful place to rest before the final leg of our journey.
Day 7: Tso Moriri to Leh – Wrapping Up the Adventure
On our last day, we drive back to Leh, stopping along the way at Chumathang Hot Springs situated at 3,960 meters (13,000 feet) for a relaxing soak. It’s the perfect way to end the trip—letting the warm water melt away the tiredness from all the driving and exploring. Again, the distance travel by us is 220 KM and time taken to cover this distance is 6-7 hours.
Once we’re back in Leh, we grab a final meal, do a bit of last-minute shopping in Leh Market, and reflect on what’s been an amazing journey.
Important Tips for Your Ladakh Adventure
Altitude Acclimatization: Remember, acclimatization is key in Ladakh due to its high altitude. Take it slow for the first couple of days to let your body adjust.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help with acclimatization. Avoid alcohol. Carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day.
Cash Availability: While Leh has ATMs of SBI and HDFC Bank, many remote areas like Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake have limited access to banking services. It’s a good idea to carry enough cash for the entire trip. We have spent around INR 50K for 2 people during our stay.
Photography: Ladakh is a photographer’s paradise! Make sure to bring a good camera to capture the incredible landscapes, but also take time to simply enjoy the views.
Packing Essentials: Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the harsh sun. Even in summer, Ladakh’s sun can be intense due to the altitude.
